 Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead on 14 June 2020 at his house in Bandra, Mumbai. On July 28, nearly a month and a half after his death, his father KK Singh lodged an FIR at a Patna police station against Sushant's alleged girlfriend, Riya Chakraborty, and five others, accusing him of cheating and abetment to suicide. After this the Bihar Police started the investigation of the case. The Enforcement Directorate also took cognizance and started its investigation into the suspicious transaction of money in this case. In the hearing of this case in the Supreme Court on August 5, advocate Tushar Mehta told that the Center has accepted the recommendation of the Bihar government for a CBI inquiry. On this, the CBI started the investigation of the case by registering an FIR against six people, including Riya Chakraborty, after getting the notification from the Center on 6 August. Hearing a petition filed by Riya Chakraborty to transfer the case from Patna to Mumbai, the Supreme Court on 19 August upheld the case registered in Bihar and ruled that the CBI would investigate the case. In this case, on August 26, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) registered a case against five people including Riya for the use of drugs.

 On September 8, NCB arrested Riya Chakraborty in a drug case related to the investigation into Sushant's death. Earlier, NCB had taken into custody 9 people including Riya's brother Shauvik Chakraborty in this drug case.

 On October 3, the head of the AIIMS Delhi team set up by the CBI to assist in the investigation, Dr. Sudhir Gupta, said that Sushant's death was a case of suicide.
